The deathbed confession of a schoolmate brings back memories for Dave Robicheaux of the murder of prostitute Ida Durbin in the 1950's. Robicheaux begins to look into the murder, but a couple of sheriffs make it clear that this could be dangerous. Matters become even more complicated for Dave when murders take place and Valentine Chalons and his sister arrive on the scene.
