After a shocking verdict is decided against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a Mississippi town's water supply, Carl Trudeau, the company's owner, appeals the verdict to the Mississippi Supreme Court. With judicial elections looming, Trudeau decides to turn the Court in his favour by recruiting a young unsuspecting candidate for Supreme Court justice whom he can control and manipulate.
